Apex Pest Control technicianTo everything, there is a season–the adage holds true for Orlando pest control, too. As the throngs of summer wasps, ants, and cockroaches begin their retreat, people in Florida begin to prepare for cooler weather which typically means more rainfall and because of that, more pest problems. Here at Apex Pest Control, we’d like to offer a few tips on how to protect your home from pests during autumn and on into winter:

  • Be wary of larvae. Keep an eye out for grubs and caterpillars that use grass as nourishment and shelter. Many insects spend the cooler fall and winter months as larvae, burrowing into the ground, tearing apart your lawn in the process.
  • Remove standing water whenever applicable. Be particularly sure to eliminate standing water near your home to discourage insects such as mosquitoes from breeding near your house. Many lay their eggs in the fall in standing water where they remain till they hatch in the spring.
  • Don’t let insects overwinter in your yard. Watch for chinch bugs retreating from your lawn to overwinter in a nearby shelter such as hedgerows, fence openings, or even under tree bark. They’ll be back to suck the life out of the grass in your lawn in the spring. Be on the lookout for other pests that overwinter as adults and who will find your home a warm, comfortable, and inviting place to live. Spiders and stinkbugs, for example, tend to take up residence in attics and crawlspaces, and mice will be looking for a comfortable winter home as well.
  • Prepare for pests before the season’s change. To keep out pests looking to overwinter in your home, take the opportunity during the seasonal transition to seal up any cracks in your foundation, fix any leaks, and eliminate debris near your home (including wood piles). Also, check to make sure doors and windows have a tight seal–not only will it help to keep utility bills low, it’ll prevent bugs and other pests from entering your home.
