Why Ants Love Your Kitchen
Do you always find ants in your kitchen? Ants can contaminate food, so finding them in your kitchen is frustrating. How are the ants getting inside your house, and why do they love your kitchen so much? The experts at Apex have the answers.
It’s Easy for Ants to Get Inside Homes
If your home’s exterior is in good repair, you may think it’s impossible for ants to come inside. Sadly, that’s not the case. Ants are tiny, and that makes it easy for them to sneak into homes. They can pass through extremely small openings that you may not even notice. This makes it nearly impossible to block every single possible entryway that ants could use.
Kitchens Attract Ants
When ants get inside homes, they head straight for the kitchen. Your kitchen is like an all-you-can-eat buffet for ants. Most ants eat a variety of foods, so they’re sure to find something they like in your kitchen. Ants like eating sugars, proteins, oils, and even plants. Even if your kitchen looks clean, ants can probably still find something tasty to eat.
How to Keep Your Kitchen Ant-Free
It’s not impossible to keep ants out of your kitchen. The first step is to find and seal any cracks or crevices that ants could use to enter your home. Pay attention to gaps under doors, tears in window screens, and the areas where pipes and wires enter the home. Check for cracks in your foundation, siding, or other areas along the ground. Cracks can be filled with caulk or another appropriate material.
No matter how careful you are, there will probably still be a few places where ants can come inside. To give them less reason to come in, make your kitchen less attractive. Keeping the kitchen as clean as possible is a key step. After you make a meal, wipe the counters and sweep the floor to get rid of any crumbs. Clean up spills, and use a cleaner like soap to deter ants. Wash dishes right away, and take out the trash often. If your pet is a messy eater, clean up their leftover food.
To further deter ants, make sure all your food is inaccessible. Check that everything in your pantry is sealed. If honey, syrup, or other sweet foods are open, ants could be attracted. Open boxes of cereal, sugar, or other pantry goods could lure ants, too. Store your food in sealed containers or in your fridge.
Ant problems in the kitchen are frustrating, but they can be controlled. When in doubt, call the experts at Apex, who can take preventative measures to keep your home pest-free.
